Liquid chlorophyll is the green pigment which is found in plants. It facilitates the absorption of light from the sun and this harnessed energy is then used for many biological processes such as photosynthesis.
Interestingly, the molecular structure of chlorophyll is similar to haemoglobin, a vital component of blood. The only difference being their centralised atom, which is magnesium for chlorophyll and iron for haemoglobin. Because of these unique similarities, liquid chlorophyll is becoming increasingly popular.
Over dosing Chlorophyll may cause diarrhoea and/or abdominal cramps.
Pregnant or nursing women should refrain from using liquid chlorophyll because of lack of safe evidence.
Patients who are undergoing guaiac card tests for faecal occult blood should avoid using oral chlorophyll, as it may lead to false positives.
